Douglas was a remarkable worker with wood – he was recognised as a “Master Craftsman” – and some of his work includes the display cases in the National Library of Scotland, and important restoration work in both the Palace of Holyrood House and within Edinburgh Castle. Born in 1937, Douglas continued transforming wood until his death early in 2021. He used his skills in vehicle restoration work – his main hobby. His best known achievement is the work completed on Edinburgh Horse Tram 23. This had been discovered in the border town of St. Boswells rotting away in a garden 100 years after it had been withdrawn from service in Edinburgh. Douglas rebuilt it to a magnificently high standard. The horse tram will be Douglas’s finest lasting memorial. Other vehicles restored by Douglas included a number of buses several of which have been given a home at the Lathalmond Transport Museum in Fife. Douglas was one of many visitors who came for a chat to the Society’s stand at the Model Rail exhibition each February.
